Chap. 178.—An ACT Appropriating Money to Defray the Expense of Re-
plenishing the Fresh Water Streams of the State with Fish.
Approved March 22, 1871.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the governor
of the commonwealth be and he is hereby authorized and re-
quired to appoint two suitable persons as commissioners of fish,
who shall hold their office during the pleasure of the governor,
and shall receive for their compensation three dollars eacb per
day while in the actual discharge of their duties, under this
act, in addition to their traveling and other necessary expenses.
2. It shall be the duty of said commissioners to inform them-
selves fully as to the methods adopted in other states and in
Europe for the artificial propagation and naturalization of fish,
and of replenishing the fresh water streams with fish, and to
proceed, so far as the sum hereinafter appropriated will admit,
in applying such method or methods towards replenishing the
fresh water streams of this state with such varieties of fish as
they shall deem best adapted to the purpose.
3. The sum of two thousand five hundred dollars is hereby
appropriated, out of any moneys in the treasury not otherwise
appropriated, in carrying out the provisions of this act, and
the governor is hereby authorized to draw said appropriation
from time to time as it may be needed.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
