Chap. 94.—An ACT Fixing the Salaries of the Judges of the Several Courts
of the Commonwealth and the Pay for the Reporter for the Court of Ap-
Approved May 18, 1870.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the compen-
sation of the judges of the several courts of this common-
wealth shall be as follows:
Supremes court of appeals.
2. The judges of the supreme court of appeals shall each
receive the sum of three thousand dollars per annum, except
the president of said court, who shall receive the sum of three
thousand two hundred dollars. The reporter of the court of
appeals, the sum of fifteen hundred dollars per annum.
8.:The judges of the circuit courts shall each receive the
sum of two thousand dollars per annum, except the judge of
the seventh circuit, who shall receive the sum of two thousand
three hundred dollars per annum.
4. The judges of the supreme court of appeals and of the
circuit courts shall each be entitled to mileage, as provided by
law, for all necessary travel to and from their respective courts.
County courts.
5. The judges of the county courts shall receive each an an-
nual salary of eight hundred dollars, and in addition thereto,
the sum of twenty-five dollars for each thousand of popula-
tion in his county or district in excess of ten thousand, exclu-
sive of the population of any city or town in said county or
district for which there may be, and shall have been created
by law, a corporation court: provided, that in no case shall
salary of a county judge exceed twelve hundred dollars.
In computing the salary of a county court judge, the popula-
tion regulating it shall be ascertained by reference to the
census of eighteen hundred and seventy, and afterwards to
the last preceding official enumeration of the inhabitants of
the state; and in such computation the fractions of a thousand
of population shall not be counted. 7
6 “he county court judges elected for districts shall each
entitled, for all necessary travel to and from their respective
courts, when held in counties other than the county of their
residence, to the same mileage as hereinbefore provided for
jadges of the supreme court of appeals and of the circuit courts.
7. The judges of the city and corporation courts shall re-
ceive the following annual salaries, respectively: The judge
of the bustings court of Richmond, the sum of two thousand
three hundred dollars; the judge of the probate or chancery
court of the city of Richmond, the sum of two thousand three
hundred dollars; the city judge of Norfolk, tha sum of two
thousand dollars; the city judge of Petersburg, the sum of
one thousand eight hundred dollars; the city judge of Lynch-
burg, the sum of sixteen hundred dollars; the city judge of
Alexandria, the sum of fourteen hundred dollars; the city
jadge of Portsmouth, the sum of thirteen hundred dollars;
the city judges of the corporations of Fredericksburg, Win-
chester, and Staunton, each the sum of seven hundred dollars:
provided, that wken the same person shall be elected judge ot
& county and also a city or corporation court therein, his aggre-
gate salary shall not exceed the sum of thirteen hundred dollars.
8. The salaries of the judges and their mileage, shall be
paid quarterly, out of the treasury of the state, and the audi-
tor of public accounts is hereby authorized and instructed to
issue his warrants therefor.
9. That sections six, seven, and eight, of chapter fourteen of
the Code of Virginia (edition of eighteenjhundred and sixty),
be and the same is hereby repealed.
10. This act shall be in force from its passage.
