Chap. 72.—An ACT to incorporate the Grand Lodge of the Indepen-
dent Order of Good Templars for the state of Virginia.
Approved April 2, 1879.
Whereas there is established in the city of Richmond a tem-
perance and benevolent association known as the Grand Lodge
of the Independent Order of Good Templars for the state of
Virginia, which has for its. object the formation and encourage-
ment of temperance and benevolence by the establishment of
subordinate lodges of Good Templars throughout the state ;
and whereas it is believed that the facilities of the said asso-
ciation, for the accomplishment of its purposes, would be greatly
improved by obtaining an act of incorporation of the trustees
thereof; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
J. Anderson Taylor, Thomas Seott, J. Gordon Baugh, Adeline
Hill, John H. Lewis and Philip Green, of the city of Richmond ;
J. W. Evans, of the city of Petersburg; A.S. Perpener, of the
city of Alexandria; and J. A. Ball, of the county of Loudoun,
and their suecessors, be and are hereby constituted and de-
clared a body politic and corporate, by the name and style
of The Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Good Tem-
plars for the state of Virginia; and by that name may sue and
be sued, plead and be impleaded with in all the courts of law
and equity in this commonwealth and elsewhere; may have
perpetual succession and a common seal; may ordain and pub-
lish such constitution, by-laws and regulations as they may
think wise and proper, and generally do every act and thing
necessary to carry into effect this act. or to promote the object
and design of said Grand Lodge, as hereinbefore set forth:
provided, always, that such constitution, by-laws, regulations
or acts shall be subject to the ratification and control of the
said Grand Lodge, and not inconsistent with the laws of the
state or of the United States.
2. That the said trustees may, to the use and for the benefit
and behoof of the said Grand Lodge, acquire, hold and possess,
rent, sell, convey, invest and otherwise manage or dispose of
as to them may scem most conducive to the interest of the said
Grand Lodge, all lands, money or other property, real or per-
sonal, which may have been, or which may be given, or other-
wise acquired for the use or benefit of said Grand Lodge, sub-
ject always to the direction and control of the said Grand
Lodge: provided that the sum of money so acquired shall not
exceed the sum of twenty thousand dollars: and provided that
the amount of land so held shall not exceed one-half of an acre
in any city, county or town in the state of Virginia.
5. That the said trustees and their suecessors, as a board,
shall have the power to fill vacancies in their own body, the
persons to fill such vacancies to be selected from. smong the
active members of some lodge of Good Templars in the state
of Virginia, in good standing in the said Grand Lodge, and the
said trustees shall hold offices as trustees no longer than they
remain members of a lodge in good standing as aforesaid.
4, That it shall be the duty of the said trustees, when so re-
quired by the said Grand Lodge, to exact of any officer thereof
bond in such penalty and with such security as to the said trustees
may seem proper. Said bond to be made payable to the said
trustees, or any five of them, conditioned for the faithful per-
formance of the said offtcer’s duties.
5. Five of the said trustees shall constitute a quorum for the
transaction of any business,
6. This act shall be in force from its passage, and shall be
subject to amendment, modification or repeal, at the pleasure of
the general assembly.
