Chap. 63.—An ACT to incorporate the Christian Brotherhood, of
Norfolk, Virginia.
Approved February 10, 1230.
1. Be it enacted by the zeneral assembly of Virginia, That
J. N. Manning, D. J. Godwin, A. Sav age, KE. T. Powell. J.B.
Riddick, and their associates be and tiey are hereby created
a body politic and corporate, with perpetual succession, by the
name and style of The Christian Brotherhood, of Norfolk,
Virginia, and by that name are hereby made capable, in law
and equity, to sue and be sned, to plead and be impleaded,
contract and be contracted with, to make, have and use a com-
mon seal, and to alter or renew the same at pleasure, and shall
have the right to take and hold, by purchase, gift or otherwise,
real and personal estate not exceeding twenty-five thousand
dollars in value, or so much thereof as may be necessary to
earry out the ohjects of this brotherhood, and to dispose of
and convey the same at pleasure.
2. The objects of this brotherhood are entirely benevolent,
and shall be established in the city of Norfolk, state of Vir-
zinia, for the purpose of encouraging a high standard of
morality, lightening the burdens of the poor, abating privation
and suffering, promoting industry, economy and needed reform,
and providing relief for widows and orphans by voluntary
contributions.
3. Any one between the ages of ten and seventy years, of
good moral repute, and whose application may be approved in
accordance with the by-laws of said brotherhood, may become
a member thereof.
4, The corporators shall elect from their own members 4
ceneral superintendent, secretary and treasurer, and appoint
all other subordinate officers and agents necessary to conduct
the affairs of the brotherhood, prescribe their duties and affix
such compensation for their services as it may deem proper.
5. The corporators shall adopt such by-laws and regulations
as may be necessary for the government of the brotherhood.
fill all vacancies in their own body and of the officers ant
agents that may occur by death, resignation or otherwise, and
three of them shall constitute a quorum to do business.
6. A misnomer of the corporation in any deed, gift, grant ot
devise, in any instrument or contract, shall not vitiate the
same if the corporation shall be sufficiently described therein
to ascertain the intention of the parties.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
