CHaP. 61.—An ACT to establish the Southern Bible and Book Asso-
ciation, of Richmond, Virginia.
Approved February 10, 1880.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
John W. Dodge, E. A. Barbour, Rev. H. M. Jackson, George
B. Steel, Rev. J. Z. Tyler, Rev. W. C. Shaetfer, O. H. Chalkley,
together with such persons as may be hereafter associated with
them, and their successors, be and they are hereby constituted
a body politic under the name and style of The Southern Bible
and Book Association, of Richmond, Virginia.
2. The said body politic and corporate is created for the
object of promoting the circulation of the sacred scriptures
and sound aids and helps to the study of the Bible. It shall
also encourage the circulation of standard school books and
sound literature generally.
ARTICLE III.
Officers.
3. The officers of this association shall be a president, vice-
president, secretary, treasurer and board of directors. The
board of directors shall be composed of ten persons elected
annually by the members of the association. Members of the
board shall be members of the association. At least two-thirds
of the board of directors shall reside in the city of Richmond,
Virginia. It shall be the daty of the board to elect annually
the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer of the
association, prescribe their duties, fix their compensation, if
any, and control the general business of the association. The
treasurer shall give bond in such amount as the board of
directors shall think proper, and shall present regular quarterly
reports to the board.
ARTICLE IV.
Members.
4, Any person, upon the payment of ten dollars (310) shall
be entitled to a certificate of life membership, which he may
hold in person or transfer to another. Life members who are
Ministers of the gospel shall have a discount of fifty per
centum on publishers’ and manufacturers’ net cash retail prices
on all bills which they may purchase of this association for
their own use and benefit or for the benefit of their families.
All other life members shall have a similar discount of twenty-
five per centum on all bills which they may purchase from this
association.
9. This constitution shall be subject to such amendments as
may be adopted by a vote of three-fourths of all the officers
of the association, notice of the proposed amendments having
been given one month previous to its Veing voted upon, but no
amendment shall be made which will interfere with the rights
and privileges of either members or donors.
10. This act shall be in force from its passage.
