CHAP. 206.—An ACT to amend and re-enact an act approved seven-
teenth February, eighteen hundred and seventy-six, and the amend-
atory acts thereto, and to change the name of the corporation to the
Broad Creek and London Bridge Turnpike Company.
Approved March 6, 1880.
1. Be it enacted, That an act approved February seven-
teenth, eighteen hundred and seventy-six, entitled an act to in-
corporate the Broad Creek Toll-Bridge and Turnpike Road
Company, amended by an act approved April fourth, eighteen
hundred and seventy-seven, and by an act passed at this ses-
sion, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
_ §1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That it shall be
> lawful to open books under the direction of Miles Selden, O. F.
Baxter, Thurmer Hoggard, G. F. B. Leighton, C. D. Barbot and
C. W. Wilson, and such other person or persons as any three
of the above-named persons may appoint, and at such time and
place as they may elect, for the purpose of receiving subscrip-
tions to a joint capital stock, not exceeding in the whole
twenty-five thousand dollars, to be divided into shares of twenty
dollars each, for the purpose of constructing a bridge across
Broad creek at about one and one-half miles from its mouth,
and a turnpike from Norfolk to London bridge, the nearest
- feasible route, with the privilege of a branch road to Princess
Anne courthouse, and such other branch or branches as the
, company may deem expedient. The bridge shall be furnished
h with a draw at the channel of Broad creek, which shall not
be less than sixteen feet in the clear; and the said turnpike
may be constructed of shell, gravel and plank, or any other
material that the company may deem fit. When four thousand
dollars shall have been subscribed, the subscribers, their exec-
utors, administrators or assigns, shall be and are hereby incor-
porated into a company by the name and style of The Broad
_ Creek and London Bridge Turnpike Company, subject to the
provisions of tke Code and statutes of Virginia, except so far
as modified by this act: provided, that the subscriptions shall
be paid in as may be required by the board of directors when
organized. The said company shall be and are hereby author- T
ized to erect gates at the bridge and such other point or points ™
as may be deemed advisable, and to charge toll as follows: for R
crossing the bridges, five cents for each horse or mule, and one
cent for each pedestrian, and in other respects the rates pre-
scribed by law, and no higher rates shall be charged for using
@ portion of said road.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage. Cc
