CHAP. 172.—An ACT to amend an act entitled an act to revive and
amend the charter of the Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum, ap-
proved February 24, 1876.
Approved March 4, 1880.
1. Be it enacted by the gencral assembly of Virginia, That
the third and fourth sections of said act be amended so as to
read as follows:
§ 3. The Lynchburg Female Orphan asylum shall have the
power to receive under its care and control all destitute white
female orphans resident in the city of Lynchburg and its
vicinity (embracing in the word orphan such as either have no
parents living, or only one living parent), and for that purpose
it shall have the power to contract by its board of directors
with the surviving parent, or if there be none such, with the
guardian of any such white female child under the age of
eighteen years, for the care, maintenance and education of such
child until she shall have attained the age of eighteen years ;
and such contract shall be binding on the parties and on such
child, and shall confer on said board of airectors through its
proper agents the sole and entire control of such child until
she attains the age of eighteen years: provided, the said
board of directors shall furnish proper maintenance for, and
shall bestow a good English education and proper moral instruc-
tion on such child.
§ 4. If such child have neither parent living nor guardian,
the said board of directors may acquire the contract aforesaid
by exhibiting to the corporation court for the city of Lynch-
burg, if the child be within its jurisdiction, if not, to the
county court of which it is a resident, an indenture, sealed
with the seal of said orphan asylum, and binding to do for such
child whatever may be required for the children coming under
its control, and if such indenture be in proper form, the court
shall order it to be recorded in the clerk’s office thereof, and
thereupon the power and control of said board of directors
over such child shall commence.
