CHAP. 168.--JOINT RESOLUTION urging Congress to appropri-
ate proceeds of sales of public lands to the education of the
people.
Approved March 4, 1880.
_It appearing that a bill is now pending before congress,
which provides that the ‘net proceeds of the sales of public
lands shall be set apart and consecrated to the education of the
people,” and also “that for the first ten years the distribution
of said net proceeds among the several states shall be made
according to the number of their respective population of ten
years old and upward who cannot read and write ;” therefore,
be it resolved by the general assembly of Virginia, .
1. That in the opinion of this body the setting apart of the
proceeds of the public lands to this most worthy and necessary
object would be an eminently wise, practical and patriotic act.
2. That our senators and representatives in congress be
requested to give prompt, active and persistent aid in securing
an early passage of this bill. .
