Chap. 642.—An ACT to authorize the Confederate memorial association of
Nottoway to deed their monument to the county of Nottoway.
Approved March 5, 1894.
Whereas Honorable B. A. Hancock, judge of the circuit court for
the county of Nottoway, on the seventeenth day of June, eighteen
hundred and ninety-three, granted to the Confederate memorial
association of Nottoway a charter, allowing it to erect on the
public square, at the county-seat of said county, and with the per-
mission of the county court thereof, a monument to perpetuate the
names of the soldiers who went out from Nottoway and served in the
armies of the Confederacy, and to hold the same and keep it in repair ;
and whereas the said association, on the twentieth day of July, eigh-
teen hundred and ninety-three, unveiled on the court green at Not-
toway courthouse a monument in marble, having thereon the names,
or such of them as could be obtained, of all men who went out from
Nottoway county during the late war and fought for the Confederate
cause, said monument having been erected at a cost of about seven-
teen hundred dollars; and whereas the said association was at the
time of the completion of said monument, and is now, unable to pay
for the same in full, but has paid thirteen hundred and fifty dollars
of that sum, leaving a balance of three hundred and fifty dollars still
due and unpaid; and whereas it is deemed best, in order that said
monument may be better cared for, preserved and protected, it should
become the property of and belong to the county of Nottoway; and
whereas the board of supervisors of said county have agreed to pay
to the said association the said sum of three hundred and fifty dol-
Jars, to be used in paying off the balance due on said monument, in
consideration whereof the said association is to make to the county
of Nottoway a fee simple deed thereto: now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
president, Benjamin Irby, and the secretary, Walter A. Watson, of
sald association, be, and they are hereby, authorized and empowered
to make to the county of Nottoway a fee simple deed to its monu-
ment, situate on the court green at Nottoway courthouse, Virginia,
in consideration of the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars, which
amount is to be used in paying off the debts of said association
in full.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
