Chap. 593.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 12 of an act to incorporate
the town of Claremont, in Surry county.
Approved March 8, 18%.
1. Beitenacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That section
twelve of an act entitled an act to incorporate the town of Claremont,
in the county of Surry, approved January sixteenth, eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-six, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as
follows:
§ 12. For common school purposes this corporation is extended s0
as to include all that area known and recorded in the county clerk’s
office as Claremont colony, and is hereby erected into a school dis-
trict, whereof James Bradbury, W. H. Sessoms and Granville Smith
are hereby appointed trustees, hulding office for one, two and three
years in the order named, or until their successors shall be qualified.
It shall be lawful for said trustees to subdivide this district, and pro-
vide for the erection of school-houses, as directed by the constitution
and laws of Virginia, secure teachers for the same and in all things
exercise the functions pertaining to their office, as indicated by the
state law, with the additional power of assessing and collecting from
tax-payers in any sub-district an annual levy for school purposes,
not to exceed thirty cents in the hundred dollars’ valuation o:
erty as per state assessment, and fifty cents poll-tax upon all
living in the sub-district, whenever a majority of the qu
voters voting in eaid sub- district at an election held at the d
school-house on the second Tuesday in July of each year x
declare. .
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
