Chap. 496.—An ACT to authorize the board of supervisors of Norfolk county to
lease or sell parish land of said county.
Approved March 1, 1894.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
board of supervisors of Norfolk county be, and they are hereby, au-
thorized to lease out for a term of years, limited or renewable, upon
such terms and conditions as they may deem best, the tract of land
situated in Tanner’s Creek magisterial district of said county known
as the parish land, and is the same that was devised to the poor
of said county by the will of Mathew Godfrey, dated thirteenth of
March, seventeen hundred and sixteen, and admitted to probate in
the county court of said county on the seventeenth day of May,
seventeen hundred and seventeen; but if the board of supervisors
of Norfolk county shall deem it best to sell rather than lease out
said parish land, then they are hereby authorized to sell the same:
provided that no lease or sale of said land under this act shall be
made except at public auction, due notice of the time and place of
which shall be given by publication for at least once a week for four
successive weeks in two or more newspapers published in the city of
Norfolk, and by handbill posted at the front doorof the court-house ;
and such lease or sale of said land made by the said board shall be
subject to the approval and ratification of the county court of said
county.
2. That in the event of the sale of said land, the net proceeds of
said sale shall be known as the parish fund, and the principal
thereof shall be perpetually maintained; and to this end the board
shall invest the same in some safe, interest-bearing security or secu-
rities, and may from time to time collect and reinvest the same, as
its safety and welfare may require; and the said board shall apply
the interest and profits of said fund to the use of the poor of said
county.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
