Chap. 286.—An ACT to provide special police for Newport magisterial district,
in the county of Warwick.
Approved February 19, 1894.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
judge of the county court of Warwick county is hereby authorized
and empowered to appoint, either in term or vacation, three persons,
residents and voters of Newport magisterial district, in the county
of Warwick, who shall constitute a board of police for the said ma-
gisterial district.
2. The term of office of the members of said board shall be one
year from the date of appointment, but they may be removed in the
manner and for the causes prescribed by section eight hundred and
twenty-one of the code of Virginia of eighteen hundred and eighty-
seven. The members of the said board shall serve without compen-
sation.
3. The said board (a majority of whom shal! constitute a quorum for
the transaction of business) shall, with the approbation of the judge of
the county court of Warwick, appoint a special police force, to consist
of not less than two suitable and discreet persons, who shall have
authority within the said magisterial district, and within one hun-
dred yards of the boundary lines of the said district, to exercise
all the powers which can lawfully be exercised by any constable for
the preservation of the peace, the arrest of offenders and disorderly
persons, and for the enforcement of the laws of the state against
crimes.
4, The said board shall fix the compensation of the members of
the said police force, which compensation shall be certified to the
judge of the county court, and by him allowed, to be paid out of the
police fund of the said district. The said board shall designate one
member of the police to be the chief of the said force, who shall
have supervision of the said force, and shall report to the board any
member of the said force who shall be guilty of any malfeasance,
misfeasance or neglect of official duty. The board shall have power
toremove any member of the police force, with the approbation of
the judge of the county court.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
