CHAP. 198.—An ACT to make the bridge at Shenandoah, Vir-
ginia, a toll bridge,
Approved February 12, 1892.
Whereas there has been constructed and completed over
the Shenandoah river, at the town of Shenandoah, Vir-
mwinia, by the West Shenandoah land company, a substan-
tial iron bridge, connecting the counties of Rockingham
and Page, ata cost of fifteen thousand dollars;
And whereas said cost of construction has never been
paid, and said West Shenandoah land company is unable
to pay for the same;
And whereas said bridge is a great public convenience,
and the said bridge cannot be opened for use by the pub-
lic until the said cost of construction is paid;
And whereas said West Shenandoah land company de-
sires to pay said cost of construction with tolls collected
from said bridge, and proposes, after receiving sufficient
tolls to pay said cost of construction, to dedicate said
bridge to the public as a free bridge; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted, That said iron bridge be, and. is here-
by, made a toll-bridge, with the right to West Shenandoah
land company to charge and receive tolls for passage over
the same at the rates hereinafter fixed: provided, however,
that said bridge continue as a toll-bridge only until said
company shall have received tolls amounting to fifteen
thousand dollars, exclusive of the cost of operating said
bridge, collecting said tolls, and keeping said bridge in
repair.
2. When said sum of fifteen thousand dollars shall
have been received by said West Shenandoah land com-
pany, as provided in the preceding section, the said bridge
shall be opened to the public, as a free bridge, by the or-
der of the county courts of Rockingham and Page coun-
ties.
3. The West Shenandoah land company shall keep an
accurate account of all tolls received from said bridge,
which shall be open at all times to the inspection of the
county courts of Rockingham and Page counties; and
said West Shenandoah land company shall make report
of said account of tolls to the said county courts on the
first day of July and the first day of January of each
year hereafter.
4. The rates of toll on said bridge shall be as follows:
For every male or female person, two cents; for all cattle,
one cent per head up to twenty, and one-half cent per
head in excess of twenty head; for each horse, mare, mule,
or gelding, two cents; for every wagon (empty or loaded)
for every animal drawing the same, five cents; for every
one-horse four-wheel riding carriage, ten cents; for every
two-horse four-wheel riding carriage, fifteen cents; for
every one-horse spring wagon, ten cents; for every two-
horse spring wagon, fifteen cents; for every carriage tied
to another vehicle, five cents; for every cart five cents;
for every two-wheeled carriage, ten cents; for each engine,
machine, wagon or other vehicle, moved or drawn by
steam power, in whole or in part, ten cents for every
wheel of such engine, machine, wagon, or other vehicle
moving over the bridge.
5. All taxes or other dues to the state of Virginia shall
be paid in good and lawful money of the United States,
and not in coupons.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
