Chap. 98.—An AOT granting a Loan of Arms of the State to the
Principal of the Fredericksburg Military Academy, and to the Fa-
culty of the Bethel Academy near Warrenton.
Approved February 26, 1876.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the governor be, and he is hereby authorized, if not incom-
patible with the public welfare, to loan to the principal of
the Fredericksburg military academy at Fredericksburg,
upon his giving good and sufficient bond for the proper care
and safe return when called for, a number of arms of the
state, sufficient to enable the students of the academy, now
properly organized, to exercise and driJl as volunteer militia,
and: also to loan to the faculty of the bethel academy near
Warrenton, Fauquier county, Virginia, one hundred stand of
arms and accoutrements for the use of the cadets of said
academy, upon their giving like security for their proper
care and safe return when called for. :
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
CuHaP. 99..-An ACT to incorporate The Masonic Mutual Life Assu-
rance Association of Norfolk, Virginia.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
John LL. Roper, Daniel Hustead, Frederick Greenwood,
Charles Greenwood, H. C. Whitehead, S. N. Brickhouse, C.
W. Kellenger, William H. Holmes, M. H. Stevens, John T.
Redmond, James E. Wright, Henry Jordan, R. A. Dobie, E.
KH. Guy, John Walters, A. C. Gale, A. Meyers, J. H. Calrow,
W. D. Aydlott, H..S. Upshaw, and their associates, be and
are hereby created a body politic and corporate, with per-
petua succession, by the name and style of The Masonic
utual Life Assurance Association of Norfolk Virginia ; and
by that name are hereby made capable, in law and equity,
to sue and be sued, to plead and be impleaded, contract and
be contracted with: to make, have, and use a common seal,
and to alter or renew the same at pleasure; and shall have
the right to take and hold by purchase, gift, or otherwise,
real and personal estate not exceeding one hundred thousand
dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary to carry out
the object of this association, and dispose of and convey the
same at pleasure.
2. The object of said association shall be to establish in
the city of Norfolk, state of Virginia, a masonic mutual life
assurance association, to the extent of providing and main-
taining a fund for the relief of widows, orphans, or beneficia-
ries of deceased members of said association.
3. Any one who has attained to the degree of master ma-
son, and is at the time affiliated with a regularly constituted
lodge, can become a member of this association.
4. There shall be a meeting of the members of this asso-
ciation called within sixty days after the passage of this act
for the purppse of electing a board of directors, to consist of
eleven members, and annually, on the first Tuesday in April
thereafter. They shall officiate until their successors are
duly elected and qualified. Said board of directors shall elect
one of that body as president and one as vice-president.
5. The board of directors shall elect from the members of
the association a secretary and treasurer, and appoint all
other subordinate officers and agents necessary to conduct
the affairs of the association, prescribe their duties, and affix
such compensation for their services as it may deem proper.
6. The board of directors shall adopt such by-laws, and
regulations as may be necessary for the government of the
association; fill all vacancies in their own body and of the
officers and agents that may occur by death, resignation, or
otherwise ; and five of them shall constitute a quorum to do
business. |
7. A misnomer of the corporation in any deed, gift, grant,
or devise, or any instrument or contract, shall not vitiate the
saine, if the corporation shall be sufficiently described therein
to ascertain the intention of the parties.
8. This act shall be in force from its passage.
