Chap. 255.—An ACT for the Relief of Thomas C. Cooke, late Collector
of Ware Township, in Gloucester County.
Approved March 29, 1876:
Whereas, on the first day of March, eighteen hundred and
seventy-three, Thomas C. Cooke, collector for Ware town-
ship, in the county of Gloucester, was delinquent on account
of state taxes in the sum of sixty-four dollars and difty cents,
and a motion was made by the commonwealth’s attorney of
the county against him, and his sureties, for the payment of
the same; and whereas, after the said motion was so made,
the said Cooke tendered to the treasurer of the said county
a check for the amount due, which was refused by the said
treasurer, on the ground that he could not receive it as the
matter was in court; and whereas owing to the igfirmity of
the judge of the county court, and other causes, the motion
could not be heard and determined until December term
(eighteen hundred and seventy-four), when-there was a judg-
ment rendered against the said Cooke for the sum of sixty-
four dollars and fifty cents, with interest at the rate of ten
per centum per annum from the date of the delinquency
until paid and the costs of the said proceeding; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That upon the
payment by Thomas C. Cooke, late collector of Ware town-
ship, in Gloucester county, of the principal, legal interest,
and costs of a judgment rendered against him by the county
court, of Gloucester county, on the fourth of November,
eighteen hundred and seventy-four, for the sum of sixty-four
dollars and fifty cents, for the non-payment of the taxes of
eighteen hundred and seventy-two, the auditor of public ac-
counts shall be and he is hereby authorized to abate there-
from the excess of legal interest which has been awarded for
such default.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
