Chap. 92.—An ACT to amend the charter of the town of Suffolk,
Approved February 8, 1879.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
sections one and twenty-nine of an act entitled an act to pro-
vide a charter for the town of Suffolk, in force March nine-
teenth, eighteen hundred and seventy-two, as amended by an
act entitled an act to amend the charter of the town of Suffolk,
approved March first, eighteen hundred and seventy-five, be
amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§ 1. Be it enacted by the general assemby of Virginia, That
so much of the land as lies and is contained within the follow-
ing boundary: beginning on Nansemond river, at the mouth of
the first branch that empties into said river on the west of the
bridZe over said river; thence up said branch to the point
where the water from the spring near the old academy lot
empties into said branch; thence running south thirteen de-
grees, west twenty-seven and one-half poles to the centre of
Pine street, on the Seaboard and Roanoke railroad; thenee
along the centre of said railroad north fifty-nine, west one hun-
dred and twenty and one-half poles; thence south eleven, west
eighty poles to the main road leading to Kilby’s mill; thence
with the same course across the lands of Jacob Lawshe sixty-
two poles; thence south sixty-five, east forty-six poles to Wel-
lons street; thence with same course forty-six poles to the
Norfolk and Petersburg railroad; thence with same course
thirty poles to a persimmon tree in a graveyard: thence south
sixty-nine, east thirty-six poles to a pine tree on Joseph P.
Hail’s land; and thence seventy-one poles to the Culloden road ;
thence north twenty, east eighty-two poles to the Norfolk and
Petersburg railroad ; thence along the centre of said railroad
east sixty poles; thence due north one hundred and forty-
eight poles tu a beech tree on the side of a ravine and on to
the centre of the Seaboard and Roanoke railroad; thence down
the centre of said railroad west to the centre of the Suffolk
lumber company’s railroad.; thence north down the centre of
said railroad to a point opposite the southeast corner of. Cedar
Hill cemetery ; thence north and west along the boundary of
said cemetery to the old boundary line of said town; thence
down a small branch to the first cross-street; thence east a
short distance to Allen’s branch at the dam over the same;
thence down the said branch to Nansemond river; and thence
up the river to the beginning, shall be and is hereby made a
town corporate, by the name and style of The Town of Suffolk,
and by that name may sue and be sued, and shall have and
exercise all the powers, and be subject to all the provisions of
the Code of Virginia, except as may be herein otherwise pro-
vided.
§ 29. The oversecr of the poor, elected under this act, shall
have charge of the poor of said town, and the expense of pro-
viding for the said poor shall be provided for by the town coun-
cil, who shall have power to levy such tax as may be necessary
for the purpose: provided, however, that the citizens of said
town shall not be liable to be assessed or levied upon for the
support of the poor of the county by the officers of said county
of Nansemond as heretofore: and provided further, that the
town council of the said town of Suffolk be authorized to fur-
nish such quarters for the poor of said town as in their disere-
tion they nay think necessary.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
