CHAP. 245.—An ACT for providing for submitting the question of
liquor license or no liquor license to the qualified voters of the town
of Glade Spring, in the county of Washington, at the first clection
for district officers, and at every subsequent election for district
officers.
Approved March 8, 1879.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be the duty of the officers conducting the elections in
the town of Glade Spring, in the county of Washington, at the
time and place of holding the first election for town officers
after the passage of this act, and every subsequent election for
town officers thereafter, to prepare a separate ballot-box, in
which shall be deposited the ballots of the then qualified voters
who may desire to vote upon the question of license for the
sale of intoxicating liquors in said town. The ballots shall be
respectively as follows: “For license for the sale of intoxi-
cating liquors ;’" ‘Against license for the sale of intoxicating
liquors.” It shall he the duty of the sergeant of said town to
post notices of said election conspicuously in said town not
less than fifteen days preceding seid election.
2. The manner of receiving and canvassing the ballots at
such elections on said question, and making returns and ab-
stracts thereof, shall conform in all respects to the require-
ments of the general election law of the state, except that the
certificate of the judges shall be as follows:
We hereby certify that at the election held ———_,
votes were cast for license for sale of intoxicating liquors,
and ———— votes were cast against license for the sale of
intoxicating liquors,

And the mayor and council of said town shall be a board of
canvassers of the returns, shall canvass these returns in like
manner as other election returns, and certify the votes cast for
and against license, respectively, to the clerk of the county
court ; a copy of which shall be laid before the county clerk by
the clerk at the next term thereafter,
3. If it appear from the abstracts and returns of any such
election that a majority of votes have been cast against license
for the sale of intoxicating liquors, then no license for such
sale in any of the districts so voting shall be granted, and any
person who shall sell any intoxicating liquors in any such town
shall incur all the penalties prescribed by the general law for
selling wine. ardent spirite, malt liquors. or any mixture of any
of them, without a license therefor.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
