CHAP. 405.—An ACT to provide for the working of the roads and
the appointment of commissioners to let out the repairing and
the building of the bridges of the county of James Uity.
Approved March 3, 1890.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That the county judge of the county of James City be
empowered to appoint one overseer of roads of each
magisterial district, who shall receive the annual pay of
fifty dollars, and who shall have the power to summon all
male citizens between the ages of eighteen and sixty
years for two days service on the roads in each year, and
every one failing to obey said summons or to do a faithful
day’s work shall, after thirty days from such failure, be
subject to a fine of seventy-five cents, which fine shall be
placed in the hands of the sheriff or some constable
to be collected, who shall proceed to collect said fine
as if it were a capias pro fine issued for a fine due the
commonwealth: provided, that all persons who may elect
may pay seventy-five cents in lieu of each day’s work.
All money coming into the hands of the overseer of roads
shall be applied to the working of the roads in the dis-
trict when so collected. The overseer of roads shall be
subject to the county court, and shall give bond and
security for one hundred dollars for the keeping of the
roads of his magisterial district in order, and shall make
a report to the county judge once a year of his receipts
and disbursements, and of the performance of his duties.
2. That the county judge of James City county be em-
powered to appoint three commissioners to let out by con-
tract the repairing and the building of all bridges in said
county of James City.
3. That the county judge of James City county be em-
powered to order the supervisors of said county to levy
for the annual pay of the overseers of roads and the ex-
penses of repairing and building the bridges.
4. Allacts in conflict with the above are hereby repealed,
and the above act shall be in force from July first, eigh-
teen hundred and ninety.
CuHaP. 406.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 8 of an act
entitled an act to it-corporate the Northern Neck railroad and
transportation company, approved January 31, 1890.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That section eight of an act entitled an act to incorporate
the Northern Neck railroad and transportation company,
approved January thirty-one, eighteen hundred and ninety,
be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§8. The said company shall have power to cross any line
at grade, and to unite, consolidate, merge, or connect with
any other railway constructed or which may hereafter be
constructed in this state, but not to unite, consolidate,
merge or connect with a competing line.
2. This act shall] be in force from its passage.
