Chap. 220.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 2 of an act
passed Februxry 27, 1856, entitled an act to give greater unifor-
mity to the charters of the Great Bridge lumber and canal com-
pany granted by North Carolina and Virginia and to repeal cer-
tain provisions thereiu.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That section two of an act passed February twenty-seventh,
eighteen hundred and fifty-six, entitled an act to give
greater uniformity to the charters of the Great Bridge lum-
ber and canal company, granted by North Carolina and
Virginia, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as fol-
lows—to wit:
§2. That to give greater uniformity to the provisions of the
said acts of this state and of North Carolina, all such of the
rights and powers conferred by the said act of North Car-
olina as are enumerated and set forth in the foregoing pre-
amble to this act are hereby conferred upon said company
with reference to theirsaid canal and the waters connected
therewith within this state, so far as the same may be con-
sistent with the provisions of the code of Virginia in rela-
tion to internal improvement companies; and such parts
of the said act of this state, passed the second day of March,
eighteen hundred and fifty-four, as may be inconsistent
with this act, are hereby repealed.
2. That the following provision contained in the said sec-
tion two of said act passed February twenty-seventh, eigh-
teen hundred and fifty-8six—to wit: ‘ provided, however,
that nothing herein contained shall be construed to author-
ize this company to charge a less rate of tol]son that part of
their canal in Virginia than the rates charged in eighteen
hundred and fifty-five, by the Dismal Swamp canal com-
pany, unless said Dismal Swamp canal company should at
any time reduce their rates of tolls, in which case this
company, shall be at liberty toreduce their rates to any ex~
tent not below the rates to which the Dismal Swamp canal
company may have reduced their toll ’—be, and the same
is hereby, repealed.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
