CHAP. 185.—An ACT to authorize the United States government
to acquire title and jurisdiction to lands at the mouth of Chess-
peake bay for sites for fortifications for defense thereof.

Approved March 4, 1590.

Whereas it has been represented to the general assembly
of Virginia, that it may be desirable for the United
States to purchase certain lands in the counties of North-
ampton, Princess Anne, and Norfolk, at the mouth of
Chesapeake bay, and to acquire title to land of the state
in the vicinity thereof, for the purpose of erecting fortifi-
cations for defense of the entrance into the Chesapeake
bay: a

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That the consent of this commonwealth be, and is hereby,
given to said purchase, and when the same shall! have been
made, jurisdiction is hereby ceded to the government of
the United States, so that congress and the authorities of
the federal government shall have all lawful power and
contro] over and in the same, as is specified in the seven-
teenth clause of the eighth section of the first article of
the constitution of the United States; and whenever the
United States desires also to acquire title to land belong-
ing to the state in the waters at or near the entrance to
Chesapeake bay for the purpose aforesaid, and application
is made by a duly authorized agent of the United States,
describing the site or sites required for the purposes afore-
said, then the governor is authorized and empowered to
convey the site to the United States, and to cede jurisdic-
tion to the said United States over the same: provided,
however, that the consent herein given shall not extend
to the purchase or acquisition of more than five hundred
acres at any one point or site for the purpose aforesaid:
and provided, further, that the state retains jurisdiction
over the same in all matters relating to the violation of
the laws of the state to the execution and service of all
processes issued by or from the courts, magistrates, or
other state officers in pursuance of law, and in all other
matters not incompatible with the consent herein given
and the rightful authority of the United States thereby
acquired or to be acquired under this act.

2. That the said lands and privileges hereby ceded, and
the fortifications, buildings, and structures that may be
erected thereon by the United States government, are
hereby exempted from all taxation so long as the same
shall be held and used by the general government for the
purpose hereinbefore mentioned, and no longer.

3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
Chap. 188 —An ACT relative to the sale of the land to be con-
veyed to the board of public works by the authorities of Emory
and Henry college. -

Approved March 4, 1890.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That the board of public works in making sale of the
land to be conveyed to it for the use of the commonwealth
by the authorities of Emory and Henry college, be, and
it ig hereby, authorized to employ an agent for making
sale of said land at a compensation not exceeding two
hundred and fifty dollars, the sale to be subject to the
approval of said board, and the proceeds arising therefrom
are to be accounted for by said board, as provided in chap-
ter fifty-eight of the code of Virginia.

2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
