CHAPTER 480
An Act to authorize certain counties to have a police department, and to
provide how such police department may be administered and
maintained.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. The governing body of any county having a population of not
more than twenty-one thousand seven hundred fifty, nor less than twenty-
one thousand five hundred shall have the power to establish a department
of police, to be known as the County Police Department.
§ 2. The governing body of each such county shall have power to
make provision for financing such police department in the county levy
and shall have further power to do all things necessary to establish, or-
ganize and administer such police department, and to carry out the
provisions of this act.
. The governing body of each such county may appoint a Chief
of Police, who shall serve at the pleasure of the governing body. Such
Chief of Police shall administer the department, and shall have the right
to hire and discharge its personnel, including its police officers.
The Chief of Police and police officers appointed pursuant to the
provisions of this act shall have all powers conferred on police officers
by general law.
An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
