Approved September 29, 1956
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. The Central School Board of the Town of Abingdon, and the
County School Board of Washington County may, with the consent of the
State Board of Education, establish joint schools for the use of the Town
of Abingdon and the Abingdon Magisterial District of Washington County
and may purchase, take, hold, lease, convey, and condemn jointly, property,
both real and personal, for such joint schools. Such school boards, acting
jointly, shall have the same power of condemnation as county school boards
except that land so condemned shall not be in excess of thirty acres for
any one joint school. Title to all such property acquired for such purposes
shall vest jointly in the Central School Board of the Town of Abingdon and
in the County School Board of Washington County in such respective pro-
portions as the school boards may determine. Such joint schools shall be
constructed, maintained, managed, operated, and controlled equally by
the County School Board of Washington County and the Central School
Board of the Town of Abingdon.
Should any joint school be constructed with funds provided solely by
the Town of Abingdon and by the Abingdon Magisterial District, the
area within the Town of Abingdon together with the area within the
Abingdon Magisterial District outside the Town of Abingdon shall con-
stitute an attendance area for such joint school so constructed, and no
pupil residing outside such attendance area shall attend any such joint
school so constructed without the consent of both the School Board of
Washington County and the Central School Board of the Town of Abingdon,
and the payment of such tuition as may be agreed to by both the School
Board of Washington County and the Central School Board of the Town
of Abingdon, and subject to such other rules and regulations as the School
Board of Washington County and the Central School Board of the Town
of Abingdon may promulgate. In all other respects all joint schools shall
be managed and controlled in accordance with the general school laws of
the State and the regulations of the State Board of Education for the man-
agement and control of jointly owned schools.
