Chap. 744.—An ACT for the relief of the Virginia military institute.
Approved March 8, 1900.
Whereas the general assembly of Virginia did, by an act approved
March seventeenth, eighteen hundred and seventy-six, authorize a loan
to the Virginia military institute out of the state treasury, for the pur-
pose of paying a debt of sixty thousand dollars contracted in restoring
the buildings, and so forth, destroyed by the Federal army in eighteen
hundred and sixty-four; and
Whereas the above loan was based largely on the expectation of re-
ceiving from the Federal government a just compensation for the de-
struction by its army of the buildings of the institute, which expectation
has not been realized; and
Whereas only twenty thousand dollars was loaned under the above
act, which amount is represented by two bonds of ten thousand dollars
each, secured by deeds of trust on the state’s own property at the Vir-
ginia military institute; and
Whereas the entire debt of the institute has now been paid from the
operations of the institution, with the exception of the above two bonds
of ten thousand dollars each, and additional valuable buildings have
been erected and the entire property of the institute is owned by the state
of Virginia; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
commissioners of the sinking fund are hereby instructed to write “ satis-
fied by an act approved in February, nineteen hundred,” across the
face of each of the above bonds, which they hold and which are carricd
as an asset of that board, and to return the same to the superintendent
of said institute and eliminate this item from the report of the assets
of the board, making an entry of their action on their books.
2. The clerk of the county court of Rockbridge county is hereby in-
structed, whenever the superintendent of the aforesaid Virginia military
institute shall present to him the above mentioned bonds marked “ satis-
fied, and so forth,” to enter on the margin of the page in the book where
the deeds of trust, securing the above mentioned bonds are recorded,
a note of this fact and the act of the general assembly authorizing the
entry of the same.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
