Chap. 612.—An ACT to authorize and empower the board of supervisors of
Mathews county to compromise a judgment in favor of said county against
the sureties of L. C. Thomas, late treasurer of said county.
Approved March 6, 1900.
Whereas on the ninth day of October, eighteen hundred and ninety-
sight, the county of Mathews obtained a judgment against L. C.
[homas, late treasurer of Mathews county, and W. J. Callis, George
B. Thomas, H. H. Foster, Elijah Buchanan, R. E. Edwards, W. G.
Hudgins, John A. Bohannon, Labin Hudgins, George W. Hudgins, and
J. P. Blake, sureties on his official bond, for the sum of three thousand
one hundred and twenty-three dollars and thirty-one cents, and twelve
Jollars and twenty-nine cents cost, subject to certain credits; and
Whereas the lands of the said W. G. Hudgins, W. J. Callis, Labin
Hudgins, and Elijah Buchanan were sold at public auction at Mathews
courthouse on February county court day, and the proceeds of said
land are insufficient, after discharging the prior lien in favor of the
commonwealth, to pay said judgment in full; and there being no other
available property owned by any of said sureties or said late treasurer
which can be sold to satisfy said judgment; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the board
of supervisors of Mathews county be, and they are hereby, authorized
and empowered to accept, as to said sureties, such compromise of the
said judgment as the said board in its discretion may deem reasonable
and proper under the circumstances.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
