Chap. 558.—An ACT for the relief of J. H. Reubush, of the county of Rock-
ingham, from improper assessments.
Approved March 65, 1900.
Whereas the property of the Virginia organ company of the town of
Dayton, in Rockingham county, was entirely destroyed by fire, and as-
sessments were made against said property for the years eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-five and eighteen hundred and eighty-six, as though
the buildings and machinery thereon had not been destroyed ; and
Whereas the lot upon which the said buildings were situated was
assessed at one hundred dollars and the buildings and machinery at
three thousand dollars, which amount of three thousand dollars should
have been deducted from the amount of said assessment for the years
eighteen hundred and eighty-five and eighteen hundred and eighty-six;
and
Whereas the said property was returned delinquent for the years
above mentioned and purchased by the commonwealth at the sale of
delinquent lots for said years eighteen hundred and eighty-five and eigh-
teen hundred and eighty-six; and
Whereas J. H. Reubush, of said county, has become the owner of said
lot and wishes to pay all taxes and levies which should have been prop-
erly assessed against said lot and relieve it of the lien which now rests
upon it alinost to its full value; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the
county court of Rockingham county shall have authority to examine
into the matter aforesaid, and if the said court is satisfied, from the
evidence adduced, that any part of the taxes and levies assessed against
said property were improperly assessed, then said court shall make an
order releasing said taxes and levies which it may deem improper, and
upon the payment of any balance of said taxes and levies that may be
found due to the persons authorized by law to receive the same, the
said taxes and levies for the years eighteen hundred and eighty-five
and eighteen hundred and eighty-six, as returned delinquent in the
name of the Virginia organ company, shall be marked as fully paid
and satisfied.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
