Chap. 537.—An ACT to provide for the payment out of the treasury for
losses sustained by destruction of property and expenses incurred to pre-
vent the spread of small-pox from an epidemic of that disease prevalent in
Indian reservation of the Pamunkey tribe of Indians.
Approved February 26, 1900.
Whereas an epidemic of small-pox became prevalent in the winter of
eighteen hundred and ninety-four and ninety-five, in the Indian reser-
vation of the Pamunkey tribe, located near White House, on both sides
of the southern railway, in the county of King William, which threat-
ened to become widely spread in the state; and
Whereas vigorous efforts were adopted by the state authorities to
stamp out and prevent the further spread of the disease; and
Whereas in the prosecution of those efforts it became necessary for
the state and county authorities to condemn and destroy, with their
contents, the houses of W. T. Bradby and George M. Cook, members of
said tribe, which were situated on said reservation; and
Whereas by an act approved March fourth, eighteen hundred and
ninety-six, the legislature of Virginia has recognized the justice of
similar claims upon the state, yet these remain unsatisfied; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the auditor
of public accounts be, and he is hereby, required to issue his warrants
on the treasurer for the payment of the following sums: To W. T.
Bradby, two hundred and seventy-five dollars, in full for house and
contents, condemned and destroyed; to George M. Cook, one hundred
and seventy-five dollars, in full for house and contents, condemned and
destroyed: provided, that when the parties, or either of them, named
in this act, shall accept the amounts herein appropriated, said amounts
shall be in full of all demands against the state of Virginia or the county
of JXing William.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
