Chap. 522.—An ACT to establish the Wise school district, in Wise county,
providing the mode of appointing trustees, and for levying tax for district
school purposes therein, and authorizing the trustees to apply money col-
lected to payment of teachers’ salaries, &c.
Approved February 26, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the fol-
lowing territory, which is now in Gladeville school district, in Wise
county, be, and the same is hereby, constituted a school district, by the
name of the Wise school district—to wit: Beginning on the main road
leading from Wise courthouse to Norton, at the Parsons shop, and
thence with the road leading to Ramsey, to Bear creek; thence up Bear
creek to the bridge across same on the road leading from Wise court-
house to Coeburn; thence with the line of S. F. Porter’s land to the
division line between said Porter and George W. Fraley; thence with
said division line a northwest direction to the Hurricane road, and with
the said Hurricane road to a corner of the land sold by T. G. Wells to
George W. Fraley; thence northwest with said line to the end of the
same, and continuing on the same course to the corner of the land sold
by said Wells to W. L. Dale; thence with said line to the top of the
ridge at said Wells’ and Dale’s corner; thence in a northwest direction
to the forks of the road leading to J. H. Gilliam’s; thence in a northwest
direction to the top of the ridge, and thence in a straight line to the main
road north of T. M. Smith’s residence, so as to include the same; thence
a straight line to the top of the ridge west of said Smith’s house; thence
with the main top of said ridge to a point opposite the low gap at the
head of the Parsons branch; thence a southeast course to the said low
gap, so as to include the residence of Mistress Carter and the house
formerly occupied by R. J. B. Hubbard; thence down said Parsons branch
to a point opposite the Parsons shop; thence in a straight line to the
beginning.
2. The trustees of the said district shall be appointed in the manner
provided by law for the appointment of district school trustees, and shall,
in addition to the duties imposed by law on district school trustees, as-
certain and report to the board of supervisors of Wise county the rate
of taxation to be levied for district school purposes in said district on
the real and personal estate therein: provided, said rate of taxation
shall not exceed five mills on the dollar in any one year.
3. The clerk of the board of trustees shall transmit to the board of
supervisors of Wise county a copy of the order ascertaining the rate of
taxation as aforesaid, which order shall be signed by the chairman of
the board, and also attested by its secretary. The board of supervisors
for Wise county shall lay a levy for district school purposes for said
district of the amount ascertained as aforesaid by the trustees.
4. The trustees may, if they deem it necessary, apply the money
collected under the provisions of this act to the payment of salaries of
teachers in said school district, as well as to district school purposes.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
