Chap. 52.—An ACT to empower the board of supervisors of the county of
Isle of Wight to sell and convey and make title to the poorhouse farm,
in said county.
Approved January 13, 1900.
Whereas the county of Isle of Wight owns, in fee simple, a certain tract
or parcel of land, near the town of Smithfield, in the county aforesaid,
adjoining the lands of John W. Gray, Edwin Chapman, deceased, E. W.
Jones and others, known as the poorhouse farm, and heretofore used as
a place of general reception for the poor of the said county; and
Whereas the board of supervisors of the said county, being of the
opinion that the interests of the said county would be promoted by a
sale of the said lands, and a reinvestment of the proceeds of sale, or so
much thereof as may be necessary, in the purchase of another and more
suitable lot or parcel of land as a place of general reception for the poor
of said county, the surplus, if any, to be used for general county pur-
poses; having first advertised the same in the manner required by law for
the sale of the corporate property of the said county, sold the said land,
at public auction, at its full price and fair market value; which sale was
duly approved and ratified by the county court of the said county, as
required by law, in the sales of corporate property of a county; and
Whereas the said land, it is believed, being originally glebe land, a
doubt arises as to the legal and proper method of selling and conveying
the same, that a good and perfect title may be vested in the purchaser
thereof; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the sale of
the said land, so made by the board of supervisors of the county of Isle
of Wight, and approved and ratified by the county court of the said
county, as aforesaid, be, and the same is hereby, ratified and confirmed.
And the said board of supervisors is hereby empowered and directed,
upon the payment of the purchase price of the said land or otherwise
securing the same according to the terms of the said sale, to execute
and deliver to the purchaser thereof, a good and sufficient deed in fee
simple, with special warranty, for the said land so sold as aforesaid.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
