Chap. 336.—An ACT to incorporate the Newport News general hospital
association.
Approved February 14, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That F. J.
Gauntlett, president; Joseph Carruthers, vice-president; L. B. Manville,
treasurer; F. C. Bivins, financial secretary; E. lu. Hite, recording secre-
tary; 8. G. B. Pearson, H. W. Hoover, J. A. Hirshberg, W. 8S. Bowen, and
J. A. Wilson, trustees, and such other persons as are now or may be
hereafter associated with them, are hereby declared to be a body politic
and corporate, by the name of Newport News general hospital associa-
tion, of Newport News, Virginia, and by that name shall be known in
law, and shall have perpetual succession and a common seal, with the
right to change the same at will, and shall have power to sue and be
sued, contract and be contracted with, plead and be impleaded, and
have all the rights and privileges of a corporation and be subject to all
of the rules, regulations, and restrictions and do all acts and enjoy all
the powers incident to similar corporations in general, under and sub-
ject to the laws of this commonwealth.
2. That the object of said association shall be the building and main-
taining of a hospital for the accommodation and convenience of every
person, regardless of wealth, position, religion, politics, citizenship, sex
or color, and to dispense charity in the city of Newport News, Virginia.
3. That the members of said corporation who are, or may be, entitled
to a vote at any election of officers, shall have full power and authority
to make and adopt a constitution and by-laws, and to prescribe rules
and regulations for the government of said corporation, and the promo-
tion of its interests and for the admission and expulsion of members, and
from time to time to alter and amend the same: provided, that the same
be not inconsistent with the constitution and laws of the United States,
and of the state of Virginia.
4. That the officers of said corporation shall consist of the president,
vice-president, treasurer, recording secretary, and financial secretary,
and a board of trustees to consist of five (5) members, and such others
as may be deemed necessary, and they shall be elected in the manner and
at such times as the consfitution or by-laws may prescribe.
5. That the said corporation may take and acquire by purchase, gift,
devise, bequests, or otherwise, and hold real and personal estate, and
lease, rent, sell, encumber, or otherwise dispose of the same in such
yogle
manner as may seem most advantageous: provided, it shall not hold at
any one time, real estate of greater value than one hundred thousand
dollars ($100,000.00): and provided further, that the said property or
any income derived therefrom shall be used wholly for the purposes of
said corporation.
6. That said Newport News general hospital association, of New-
port News, Virginia, being purely charitable and benevolent, shall be
exeinpt from the payment of all taxes, both state and municipal.
