Chap. 160.—An ACT regulating the appointment of assessors of lands ant
lote in the city of Newport News, and providing for compensation of same.
Approved January 26, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That it shal
be the duty of the judge of the corporation court of the city of Newport
News, on or before the first day of February, nineteen hundred, anc
every five years thereafter, to appoint three proper persons from the
different sections of the said city to assess the value of all lands anc
lots, together with improvements thereon, in the said city, two of whor
shall be freeholders, said persons to have the same qualifications anc
to be appointed on the same conditions as prescribed by law for the
appointment of assessors; and such assessors appointed under this act.
shall be known as the board of assessors of the city of Newport News.
and shall, in the discharge of their duties, be governed by the provisions
of chapter twenty-three of the code of Virginia, of eighteen hundred
and eighty-seven, and the other laws of Virginia, with respect to the
assessment of lands.
2. The council of the said city is hereby authorized and shall pay to
each of the said assessors an additional compensation over and above
that already provided by law, the sum of two dollars per day for each
day of actual service.
3. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act are hereby
repealed.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
