Chap. 141.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sections 2, 6, and 8 of an act
entitled an act to incorporate the town of Lawrenceville, Virginia, approved
April 29, 1874, and to add two additional sections to said act.
Approved January 24, 1900.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That sections
two, six, and eight of an act entitled an act to incorporate the town
of Lawrenceville, Brunswick county, Virginia, approved April twenty-
nine, eighteen hundred and seventy-four, be amended and re-enacted
so as to read ag follows:
§ 2. The boundaries of said town shall be as follows: The land ex-
tending one quarter of a mile north and east, half of a mile south and
three-quarters of a mile west, from the court-house of the said county
of Brunswick.
§ 6. A majority of said council shall have power to assess and collect
an annual tax within the said town for the purposes before mentioned,
on all such property, real and personal, as is now or may be subject
to taxation by the revenue laws of this commonwealth, and upon dogs:
provided, that the tax on said real and personal estate shall not exceed
in any one year seventy-five cents on everv hundred dollars value thereof:
and moreover, it shall be competent for said council to conduct and
distribute water into and through said town. and to establish such water-
works and other appliances as the council of said town may deem proper
for that purpose.
s 8. All fines and forfeitures provided for by this charter may be
recovered as provided by law in cases of fines and forfeitures imposed
by the laws of the state of Virginia, and shall be paid into the treasurv
of the corporation and used as a part of its revenue.
2. Be it further enacted that sections nine and ten be added to said
act as follows:
§ 9. The property, real and personal, within the corporate limits of
said town, shall not be assessed with a road tax bv the county authorities
of Brunswick county so long as it keeps its streets in order.
§ 10. The boundaries of the said town shall be deemed to constitute
a lawful fence in all respects. The council shall have the power to make
such ordinances, by-laws, orders, and regulations as they may deem
necessary to prevent hogs, dogs, cows, horses, mules, and other animals
from running at large in the limits of the town, and may subject the
owners thereof to such fines, regulations and taxes as the said council
may deem proper, and may sell said animals at public auction, if said
fines are not paid after five days’ notice and out of the proceeds pay
the expenses of keeping and selling said animals and said fines and costs,
and the balance, if any, shall be paid to the owner of said animal or!
animals.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
