Chap. 1219.—An ACT for the relief of Ann Smith, widow of a Confederate
soldier.
Approved March 7, 1900.
Whereas Richard Smith, a deceased Confederate soldier of company
C, seventh Virginia infantry, was a true and gallant soldier. was loval
to Virginia, was wounded during the war, and has since died from the
effects of his wounds, leaving the said Ann Smith as his widow; and
Whereas the said Ann Smith, widow, is in extreme poverty, and
dependent upon the charity of her neighbors for a support; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the county
court of Orange county shall examine into the facts above stated in
regard to Richard Smith, a Confederate soldier, and should it be that
he was true and loyal to Virginia through the war, and that he is now
dead, and that the said Ann Smith is his widow, and is needy and poor,
and should receive aid from Virginia, and if the county court of Orange
should send a certificate of the facts to the auditor of public accounts of
Virginia, then the auditor of public accounts is directed to place the
name of Ann Smith on the pension list, and pay her annually the sum
of fifteen dollars, on and after the first day of April, nineteen hundred.
2. Vhis act shall be in force from its passage.
