CHAPTER 516
An Act to amend and reenact § 16.1-208 of the Code of Virginia, relating
to powers, duties and functions of certain probation officers.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 16.1-208 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted
as follows:
§ 16.1-208. In addition to any other powers and duties imposed on
them by this law, probation officers appointed hereunder shall:
_ (1) Investigate all cases referred to him by the judge or any person
designated by the judge so to do, and shall render reports of such investi-
gation as required;
(2) Supervise such persons as are placed under his supervision and
shall keep informed concerning the conduct and condition of every person
under his supervision by visiting, requiring reports and in other ways,
and shall report thereon as required;
(3) Under the general supervision of the judge investigate complaints
and accept for informal supervision cases wherein such handling would
best serve the interests of all concerned;
(4) Use all suitable methods not inconsistent with conditions imposed
by the court to aid and encourage persons on probation and to bring about
improvement in their conduct and condition;
(5) Furnish to each person placed on probation a written statement
of the conditions of his probation and instruct him regarding the same;
Keep records of his work and perform such other duties as the
judge or other person designated by him or the Director shall require;
Have the authority of a police officer.
The judge of the juvenile court in any county may, in his discretion,
provide that support payments be made to and disbursed by the chief
probation officer, or someone designated by such officer in writing, and in
either case when bonded as provided by § 16.1-16, who shall in that event
keep the accounts relating to such support payments.
