CHAPTER 40
An Act to amend and reenact § 56, as amended, of Chapter 309 of the Acts
of Assembly of 1920, approved March 19, 1920, which chapter provided
a charter for the city of Bristol, the section fixing the salaries and
compensation of charter officers. rH 108)

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 56, as amended, of Chapter 809 of the Acts of Assembly of
1920, approved March 19, 1920, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 56. The respective officers provided for in this charter shall re-
ceive such salaries, compensation, fees and emoluments as may be provided
by the general laws of the State, and prescribed by the council of the city
of Bristol except as herein otherwise provided.
The members of the present council shall each receive * a salary *
at the rate of one hundred dollars per year for the city’s fiscal year ending
June thirtieth, nineteen hundred sixty. Thereafter the members of the
present and each succeeding council shall each receive a salary at the rate
of three hundred dollars per year.
The mayor shall receive a salary of three hundred dollars per year,
payable in monthly installments of twenty-five dollars each, until Septem-
ber first, nineteen hundred and thirty, after which date he shall receive a
salary of not less than three hundred dollars nor more than six hundred
dollars, to be fixed by the council, payable in equal monthly installments,
unless otherwise provided by general law.
2. This act shall be in effect on and after July 1, 1960.
