An Act to provide that it shall be unlawful to construct, install or main-
tain certain electric fences for use upon lands used for agricultural
purposes; to define “electric fences’, and to provide a penalty for
violations.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. § 1. It shall be unlawful for any person to construct, install or
maintain for use upon any land used for agricultural purposes, or for
any person exercising supervision or control over any such land to permit
any other person to construct, install or maintain for such use, any elec-
tric fence without the use of a controlling device operating from a power
source not exceeding one hundred twenty-five volts and delivering to the
fence intermittent current of a value not in excess of five hundred milliam-
peres maximum peak, and no more than one hundred fifty milliamperes
for any period of one ten thousandth of a second and ten milliamperes
for any period of one-tenth second; provided, that if the controlling device
is of the continuous delivery design, the current value delivered to the fence
from the controller shall not exceed five milliamperes. However, if an
appropriate safety device is provided which will interrupt the circuit in
no more than five seconds the steady current value shall not exceed twenty-
five milliamperes.
§ 2. As used in this act, “electric fence” means a fence designed to
conduct electric current along one or more wires thereof so that a person
or animal touching any such wire or wires will receive such electric cur-
rent.
§ 3. The violation of any provision of this act shal! constitute a
misdemeanor.
