An Act to amend and reenact §§ 5 and 18 of Chapter 898 of the Acts of
Assembly of 1982, approved March 29, 1982, which provided a new
charter for the city of Williamsburg, the sections relating to municipal
officers of the city. TH 50]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That §§ 5 and 13 of Chapter 393 of the Acts of Assembly of 1932,
approved March 29, 1932, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 5. The municipal officers of said city shall, beginning September
first, nineteen hundred and thirty-four and biennially thereafter, consist
of * a city sergeant, and a commissioner of the revenue, elected by the
qualified voters of said city, five councilmen, elected as provided in § 13 of
this act, and a treasurer, a sheriff, an attorney for the Commonwealth, and
a clerk of the circuit court of the city of Williamsburg and of the county
of James City, elected conjointly for the city of Williamsburg and the
county of James City, by the voters of the said county and city, and such
corner ian officers as are herein provided for or may be provided for by the
council.
§ 18. The council of the city * shall be composed of five members.
They shall be elected by the popular vote of the qualified voters of the city.
Of the councilmen elected at the regular municipal election held in the
year nineteen hundred and sixty, the three candidates receiving the highest
number of votes shall be elected for terms of four years; the two candidates
receiving the next highest number of votes shall be elected for terms of
two years, all terms beginning September one, nineteen hundred sixty.
Thereafter all councilmen shall be elected for terms of four years but
vacancies occurring other than by expiration of term shall be filled as
provided in § 8.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
