CHAPTER 246
AN ACT to provide for the acceptance and placement of a statue of Edgar
Allan Poe, the same being contributed by Dr. George Edward Barks-
dale; and to appropriate funds. [S 80]

Whereas, Dr. George Edward Barksdale has, from his own funds, had
a life size bronze statue made of Edgar Allan Poe and desires to contribute
the same to the Commonwealth; and
Whereas, it is fitting that this gracious offer should be accepted and
the Capitol Square should contain the statue of a poet who is recognized
as one of the outstanding poets of all time; now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. The Commonwealth hereby accepts the statue of Edgar Allan Poe
which is being contributed by Dr. George Edward Barksdale. The statue
shall be erected in the Capitol Square area at a site to be selected by the
ore a Commission, with the approval of the Governor, in writing, first
obtained.
2. There is hereby appropriated from the General Fund of the State
treasury the sum of twenty-five hundred dollars to be expended in the
proper placement and erection of the Poe statue and to defray matters
incident thereto.
An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
