CHAPTER 1
AN ACT to provide for the appointment by the Governor of a Secretary of
the Commonwealth and to establish the term of office thereof; to pro-
vide for appointments to fill vacancies; and to fiz the salary of such
officer and to appropriate funds therefor. CH 84]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. The Governor, subject to confirmation by the General Assembly, shall
appoint a Secretary of the Commonwealth for a term commencing on the
Monday after the third Wednesday in January after his inauguration. The
appointment shall be for a term of four years. Vacancies shall be filled by
appointment by the Governor for the unexpired term and shall be effective
until thirty days after the next meeting of the ensuing General Assembly
and, if confirmed, thereafter for the remainder of the term.
2. On and after the Monday after the third Wednesday in January, nine-
teen hundred and fifty-eight, and until July one, nineteen hundred and
fifty-eight, the salary of the Secretary of the Commonwealth and ex officio
Secretary to the Governor shall be paid in semimonthly installments in
such amount as to equal on an annual basis a salary of ten thousand dollars
per annum.
8. There is hereby appropriated from the general fund of the State
treasury a sum sufficient for the purposes of this act.
4. An emergency exists and this act shall be in force from its passage.
