CHAPTER 25
An Act to amend and reenact § 4, as amended, of Chapter 64 of the Acts
of Assembly of 1922, approved February 25, 1922, which provided a
new charter for the city of Suffolk, the section relating to composition
and compensation of council, and filling vacancies. HT

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 4, as amended, of Chapter 64 of the Acts of Assembly of 1922,
approved February 25, 1922, be amended and reenacted as follows:
§ 4. The council shall consist of five members, who shall be elected on
a general ticket at large, and shall serve for a term of four years from the
first day of September next following the date of their election and until
their successors shall have been elected and qualified; provided, however,
that at the first election hereunder the three candidates having the highest
number of votes shall serve for four years, and the two candidates having
the next highest number of votes shall serve for two years. The council
shall be a continuing body, and no measure pending before such body shall
abate or be discontinued by reason of the expiration of the term of office
or removal of the members of said body, or any of them. The members of
the council shall each be paid the sum of * twenty dollars for each meeting
they actually attend but they shall not receive more than * four hundred
and eighty dollars in any one year.
Vacancies in the council shall be filled within thirty days, for the
unexpired term, by a majority vote of the remaining members, except as
otherwise provided by general law.
2. An emergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
