HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO 23
Proposing amendment to § 59 of the Constitution of Virginia.
Agreed to by the House of Delegates February 13, 1956
Agreed to by the Senate February 24, 1956
Resolved by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, a majority
of the members elected to each house agreeing, that the following amend-
ment to the Constitution of Virginia be, and the same hereby is, proposed
and referred to the General Assembly at its first regular session held after
the next general election of members of the House of Delegates for its
concurrence, in conformity with the provisions of section one hundred
ninety-six of the said Constitution, namely:
Strike from the Constitution of Virginia § 59, which is as follows:
§ 59. General Assembly shall not incorporate churches or religious
denominations; may secure church property.—The General Assembly shall
not grant a charter of incorporation to any church or religious denomina-
pol but may secure the title to church property to an extent to be limited
y law.
And insert in lieu thereof the following:
§ 59. The General Assembly may limit by law the amount of prop-
erty that may be owned by any church or religious denomination.
