CHAPTER 344
An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered
58-$12.1, relating to unclaimed personal property of convicts, and to
provide for the disposal thereof. [8 27]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of Virginia be amended by adding section number
53-312.1 as follows:
§ 53-312.1. If any convict or inmate of a penal institution as defined
in Section 53-9, upon being released or having escaped, leaves any article or
articles of personal property, including bonds, money and any intangible
assets, in the custody of such penal institution, the Director may, in his
discretion, after the lapse of three years from the date of such release or
escape, if no claim therefor has been made by the owner, sell such personal
property, either at public or private sale if the same be not of a value
greater than one hundred dollars. The proceeds of such sale shall escheat
to the Commonwealth and shall be paid into the State Treasury and credited
to the literary fund.
