CHAPTER 95
An Act to amend and reenact § 14-156 of the Code of Virginia, providing
for maximum compensation for certain officers so as to increase said
maximum for a justice of the peace in certain counties. fH 81)

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That § 14-156 of the Code of Virginia be amended and reenacted as
ollows:
§ 14-156. The total annual compensation, exclusive of expenses
authorized by the board of supervisors or other governing body of the
county or the council of the city, of an officer mentioned in § 14-146,
shall not exceed the sums hereinafter named, to-wit:
In cities or counties having a population of fifty thousand or more
such compensation of any such officer shall not exceed the sum of four
thousand dollars per annum; with a population between twenty-five thou-
sand and fifty thousand, such compensation shall not exceed three thou-
sand dollars per annum; with a population between fifteen thousand and
twenty-five thousand, such compensation shall not exceed twenty-four
hundred dollars per annum; provided, however, that in any county having
a population in excess of twenty-two thousand five hundred but not in
excess of twenty-three thousand, such compensation for a justice of the
peace shall not exceed forty-five hundred dollars; with a population below
fifteen thousand, such compensation shall not exceed eighteen hundred
dollars per annum.
