An Act to provide for an increase in the retirement compensation of cer-
tain retired State employees and teachers and certain beneficiaries
thereof. 'S 102]

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1, § 1. Onand after July one, nineteen hundred fifty-four the amount of
the retirement allowance otherwise payable to (1) any former teachers who
were retired under the provisions of Chapter 36 of the Code of 1919 as it
existed immediately prior to July one, nineteen hundred forty-two or (2)
any teachers and State employees retired since June thirty, nineteen hun-
dred forty-two under the provisions of the repealed Virginia Retirement
Act with thirty or more years of service in case of service retirement or
twenty or more years of service in case of disability retirement, provided,
in the case of such service retirement such teacher or State employee has
attained sixty-five years of age by July one, nineteen hundred fifty-four,
shall be entitled to and shall receive a retirement allowance in an amount,
which, when added to the annual retirement allowance otherwise payable,
shall not be less than eight hundred forty dollars per annum; provided,
however, that this provision shall not apply to increase any retirement
allowance of any retired teacher or State employee receiving a retirement
allowance which would have amounted to eight hundred forty dollars per
annum if a reduced allowance had not been elected under one of the
options under the repealed Virginia Retirement Act, nor shall this pro-
vision apply to increase the annual retirement allowance of any beneficiary
who is receiving or who may receive a retirement allowance as a beneficiary
under one of the options elected under the repealed Virginia Retirement
Act.
§ 2. (1) Any former teachers who were retired under the provisions
of Chapter 36 of the Code of 1919 as it existed immediately prior to July
one, nineteen hundred forty-two and (2) any teachers and State em-
ployees retired since June thirty, nineteen hundred forty-two under the
provisions of the repealed Virginia Retirement Act with thirty or more
years of service in case of service retirement or twenty or more years of
service in case of disability retirement shall be entitled to and shall re-
ceive a retirement allowance in an amount which, when added to the annual
retirement allowance otherwise payable, shall be not less than six hundred
dollars per annum; provided, however, that any retired teacher or State
employee, receiving a retirement allowance under one of the options of the
repealed Virginia Retirement Act which allowance is less than six hundred
dollars per annum, shall receive an increase in such allowance proportionate
to the increase that such retired person would have received as above pro-
vided on a straight life annuity as set forth in such repealed Virginia
Retirement Act; provided, further, that the beneficiary of any retired
teacher or State employee receiving an allowance at the time this act be-
comes effective or subsequent thereto shall receive a proportionate increase
in such allowance equivalent to the increase that the grantor of such allow-
ance would have received under the next preceding proviso.
