CHAPTER 18
An Act to authorize the Virginia Military Institute, subject to the approval
of the Governor, to lease certain property. 3 40

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. §1. The Virginia Military Institute is authorized to lease all or any
portion of the hereinafter described real property held by the Institute in,
upon or adjacent to the grounds of the Institute:
That lot, piece or parcel of land, with all improvements thereon, now
comprising the present Alumni quarters, located at 308 Letcher Avenue,
Lexington, Virginia, together with such additional land as may be neces-
sary, adjacent to, and in the rear of the existing quarters, such additional
land being approximately one hundred feet deep and the same width as 308
Letcher Avenue.
§2. Such lease is to be made with the Virginia Military Institute
Alumni Association, Incorporated, upon such terms and conditions as may
be approved by the Board of Visitors.
§ 8. No such lease shall be made unless the Governor consents thereto
in writing. The form of any such contract of lease shall be approved by the
Attorney General.
§ 4. Any funds derived by the lessor from the proceeds of any such
lease shall be paid into the State treasury.
2. Anemergency exists and this act is in force from its passage.
CHAPTER 18
Zoning
18.01.—Authority of Council.
For the purpose stated in Article 1 of Chapter 24 of Title 15 of the
Code of Virginia, the city council is hereby empowered to pass zoning
ordinances in conformity with the said act, as amended, subject, however,
to the following modifications thereto.
(1) The zoning ordinances and set back lines as they now exist shall
continue to be in full force and operation until amended or repealed by
the City council.
(2) The board of zoning appeals as now constituted shall continue in
office for the remainder of their terms and until their successors are
appointed by the council. The board of zoning appeals shall consist of
five (5) members appointed by the city council for a term of three (3)
years, and in so far as not inconsistent with this charter and the existing
ordinances now in effect or hereinafter enacted, the powers, duties, au-
thority and procedure of Article 1 of Chapter 24 of Title 15 of the Code
of Virginia shall govern. The board of zoning appeals shall elect a secre-
tary who shall keep a written record of proceedings at its meetings. All
official orders, decisions and permits issued by the board shall be in
writing and a copy thereof shall be delivered to the clerk’s office of the
City within ten (10) days after such order, decision, or permit is arrived
at or issued.
