Chap. 93.—JOINT RESOLUTION Memorializing Congress to Abolish
the Internal Tax on all Liquors made from Fruit.
Agreed to February 8, 1873.
Whereas, it is believed by the general assembly of Virginia
that the tax imposed by the laws of the United States upon
spirituous liquors distilled from fruit is burdensome upon the
people, creating, as it does, a monopoly in the production of
such liquors, and practically prohibiting persons of small
means from reaping the full benefit of their orchards and
vineyards; therefore,
1. Be it resolved (the senate concurring), That our senators
be instructed and our representatives in congress earnestly
requested to do all in their power to secure the speedy aboli-
tion or modification of such tax.
2. Resolved, That the governor of this state cause a copy of
these resolutions to be forwarded to each of our senators and
representatives in congress.
