Chap. 90.—An ACT to Incorporate the Town of Rocky Moant, in the
County of Fr i
In force February 17, 1873.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That the town of
Rocky Mount, in the county of Franklin, as the same has here-
tofore been, or may hereafter be, laid off into lots, streets and
alleys, shall be and the same is hereby made a town corporate,
by the name of the town of Rocky Mount, and by that name
shall have and exercise the powers conferred upon towns by
the fifty-fourth chapter of the Code of Virginia, edition of
eighteen hundred and sixty, so far as the same is in force, and
shall be subject to and governed by all laws now in force, or
which may hereafter pass, for the government of towns con-
taining less than five thousand inhabitants.
2. The boundaries of the town shall be one-half a mile from
the court-house building in said town, extending east, west,
north and south, and embracing the area contained therein, so
4s to make said area one mile square.
3. There shall bea board of trustees for said town, who
shall compose the council, a majority of whom shall constitute
2 quorum for the transaction of business; and the following
named persons shall constitute the board of trustees, to wit:
Giles W. B. Hale, Hughes Dillard, Thomas B. Greer, John J.
Saunders, William KE. Andrews, Hugh Nelson, and Robert A.
Scott, to hold their offices until their successors are elected
nd qualified according to law.
4. The trustees shall have power to select from their own
yody a presiding officer, who shall act as mayor of the town,
and appoint a town sergeant and such other officers as they
may think necessary, together with a police force for the pro-
per government of the town.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
