AN ACT to amend the Code of 1950 by adding a section numbered
14-163.1, relating to allowances of clerks of counties, so as to
increase the allowances to the clerks of certain counties; and
to repeal § 14-164 of the Code of 1950 relating to the same
matters.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. That the Code of 1950 be amended by adding a section num-
bered 14-163.1, as follows:
§ 14-163.1. Fixing of allowances to clerks of counties.—The
governing body of every county is empowered to determine what
annual allowances, payable out of the county treasury, shall be
made to the county clerk of such county so that, in counties having
a population less than ten thousand, the allowance to the county
clerk shall not be less than three hundred, nor more than six hun-
dred, dollars; in counties having ten, and less than fifteen, thous-
and, not less than four hundred, nor more than seven hundred,
dollars; in counties having fifteen, and less than twenty, thousand,
not less than five hundred, nor more than eight hundred, dollars;
in counties having twenty, and less than thirty, thousand, not less
than six hundred, nor more than nile hundred, dollars; in counties
having thirty, and less than forty, thousand, not less than seven
hundred, nor more than one thousand, dollars; in counties having
forty, but not more than fifty, thousand, not less than one thous-
and, nor more than fifteen hundred, dollars; and in counties hav-
ing over fifty thousand, not less than twelve hundred, nor more
than fifteen hundred, dollars; provided that the minimum and
maximum amounts of the annual allowances to the clerks in the
following named counties shall be the amounts in dollars immedi-
ately following the names of the counties, to-wit: Accomack: one
thousand-fifteen hundred; Allbemarle: twelve hundred-fifteen hun-
dred; Arlington: maximum one thousand; Alleghany: seven hun-
dred-fifteen hundred; Amelia: six hundred-twelve hundred fifty;
Appomattox: one thousand-fifteen hundred; Amherst: twelve hun-
dred-two thousand; Bath: seven hundred fifty-seventeen hundred
fifty; Bedford: seven hundred-twelve hundred; Bland: four hun-
dred-eight hundred; Botetourt: maximum twelve hundred; Bruns-
wick: one thousand-fifteen hundred; Buchanan: one _ thousand-
fifteen hundred; Buckingham: one thousand-fifteen hundred;
Campbell: one thousand-fourteen hundred; Caroline: eight hun-

Provided, further, that none of the provisions of this section
shall apply to any county operating under any form of county
organization and government provided for in §§ 15-345 to 15-361.
2. That § 14-164 of the Code of 1950 is repealed.
