AN ACT to amend Chapter VI of Chapter 168 of the Acts of
Assembly of 1874-75, approved March 11, 1875, as amended,
which provided a charter for the city of Petersburg by add-
ing a section numbered 8 providing for appointment of a
civil and police justice for the city.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia: |
1. That Chapter VI of Chapter 163 of the Acts of Assembly
of 1874-75, approved March 11, 1875, be amended by adding a
section numbered 8 as follows:
§ 8. There shall be appointed by the judge of the hustings
court of the city of Petersburg prior to the first day of January,
nineteen hundred and fifty-four, and every four years there-
after, a civil and police justice for the city, who shall hold office
for a term of four years, and whose term of office shall begin
on the first day of January succeeding his appointment. Vacan-
cies in the office of the justice shall be filled for the unexpired
term by the judge. No civil and police justice shall hereafter
be elected in the city under the provisions of § 16-84 of the
Code of 1950. But all provisions of the Code of Virginia and
Acts of the General Assembly relating to the civil and police
justice referred to in § 16-84 of the Code and to his jurisdiction,
powers and duties, and to proceedings in his court, shall be, or,
when enacted, shall become, applicable to the civil and police
justice to be appointed as herein provided, and to his jurisdic-
tion, powers and duties and to proceedings in his court.
