CHAPTER 143
AN ACT to require the Commonwealth of Virginia to be free of
the controls of the “Housing and Rent Act of 1949”, and
any future law passed by Congress on the subject of rent
controls; and to repeal Chapter 6 of Title 44 and §§ 44-160
through 44-203 of the Code of 1950, the Chapter and sec-
tions relating to State rent control; and to declare an
emergency.

Whereas, the Congress of the United States, in enacting
Public Law 31, known as the “Housing and Rent Act of 1949”,
provided that if any State by law declares that Federal rent
control is no longer necessary in such State or any part thereof
and notifies the Housing Expediter of such fact, the Housing
Expediter shall immediately make public announcement to the
effect that he has been so advised and at the same time all rent
controls, etc., under this act, as amended, with respect to
housing accommodations within such State or part thereof shall
be terminated on the fifteenth day after receipt of such advice;
and
Whereas, the General Assembly is of opinion that rent
controls by the Federal government are no longer necessary or
advisable and that the economic laws of supply and demand and
free bargaining should be allowed to operate and so declares,
therefore:
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:
1. §1. The General Assembly of Virginia hereby declares
that Federal rent control is no longer necessary in this State or
any part thereof and directs that the Keeper of the Rolls and
the Clerk of the House of Delegates notify the Housing Expe-
diter at once of the action of the General Assembly of Virginia
this day taken.
2. That Chapter 6 of Title 44 and §§ 44-160 through 44-203
of the Code of 1950 are hereby repealed.
. An emergency exists and this act shall become effective on
June 10, 1950.
