Chap. 330.—An ACT to Incorporate the Rockbridge McAdam Road
Company.
Approved March 31, 1873.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That John W.
Barclay, J. T. L. Preston, C. A. Davidson, G. W. Pettigrew,
Wm. Allan, Bolivar Christian, Wm. A. Anderson, Jo. Sherrard,
Jo. M. Adams, Wm. A. Wilson, H. A. Goodloe, Wm. T. Poague
and Wm. M. Harvey, their associates and successors, are hereby
created a corporation, by the name of the Rockbridge McAdam
Road Company, with all the powers and under the general re-
strictions in the Code of Virginia, for the government and con-
duct of such corporations.
2. The said corporation shall have special power to construct
a graded road, of width not less than twenty feet, and McAd-
amize all, or any portion thereof, from Goshen, on the Chega-
peake and Ohio Railroad, to Lexington, and thence by or near
the Natural bridge to the James River and Kanawha canal,
at some point near Gilmore's mill, in Rockbridge, or in Bote-
tourt county; and may make branches where necessary, from
the main stem to the Cold Sulphur Springs, to the Rockbridge
and Jordan Alum Springs and to the Rockbridge Baths; and
the said graded road may be located upon any county road, or
upon any turnpike, which, for the past three consecutive years,
has been abandoned or neglected by its corporators, or has
heretofore been turned over to the county in which it lies.
3. The capital stock shall be not less than fifteen thousand
dollars nor more than one hundred and fifty thousand dollars,
in shares of twenty-five dollars each. Any township may, by
its board, subscribe to the capital stock of said corporation, in
such sum, and on such conditions, and in such manner as the
township board may determine: provided, that no such sub-
scription shall be valid unless the same shall have been author-
ized and approved by three-fifths of the voters, voting on the
question at any general election in the township subscribing
to the capital stock of said company.
4. The rate of tolls chargeable on said road shall not exceed
the maximum rates charged upon the Valley turnpike within
the year eighteen hundred and seventy-two.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
